 PROJECTS UNDERTAKEN IN 2001 - 2002

NATURAL CALAMITY:
A Natural calamity in the form of unprecedented floods ravaged the State of Orissa leaving lakhs of people marooned and homeless, besides claiming innocent lives. As the news spread members from all the four clubs of Bhubaneswar assembled at Rotary Bhawan from 19th to 22nd July, 2001 and prepared Food Packets which were Air Dropped by IAF Helicopters in the flood-affected areas. A total of 3500 packets were air dropped during this period. PP Mrs Manjula Mishra and IPP Mrs Lalita Agarwal visited a few of the villages with the Rotarians and distributed cooked food to the hungry people who had not eaten properly during this ordeal. We thank every member for the effort and time they put in to serve the distressed.

SLUM ADOPTION & UPLIFTMENT
The adopted slum, "Sabar Sahi" under 3-H project of RC Bhubaneswar has been the focus of attention this year. Tremendous effort has been put in to make the residents conscious of the environment for which they must care for in order to have a healthy and pollution free living. The dwellers have been educated on basic hygienic practices, through distribution of posters, pamplets and demonstrations.
Education: One of the burning issues that confront our country is Education. If we are able to educate our population with the two basic 'R's' of reading and writing, many problems in this country would find solutions automatically and the common man would learn some skill for a dignified living. Drinking Water: "Water, Water everywhere and not a drop to drink." Water is the very essence and a basic necessity of life. It is alarming that 80 % of all human diseases are water borne. The care taken at home to ensure the quality of water one drinks is often not possible in a slum. In our fight against the main source of infection and disease, we have inaugurated the "Pure Drinking Water Project" at Sabar Sahi by our distinguished Dist. Chairman. Terra-cotta water filters have been distributed to 120 families. The total Project cost is more than Rs. 25,000/-. Providing clean and safe drinking water to the slum dwellers is one of the potent ways to show that we at Inner Wheel care for their health and well being. We sincerely thank UNICEF for having come forward to help us in our endeavour. "Water, Water everywhere and not a drop to drink." Water is the very essence and a basic necessity of life. PHYSICALLY & MENTALLY CHALLENGED
Help to Blind: -
Chairman Mrs. Nalini Mohanty set the ball rolling with a proposal of providing a 'TALKING LIBRARY' at the Bhima Bhoi Blind School. The idea was brilliant and we embarked on this ambitious project. The estimated project cost involved Rs.25, 000/- and undoubtedly this would be a land mark in the history of our club for a noteworthy long term project to be established in this millennium year. This project has been conceived as a comprehensive library comprising of recorded cassettes of Text Book courses in clear audible voice which will enable the visually handicapped students to retain, recall and reproduce the lessons. This project will be under taken in three phases and will be completed by September, 2003.

We had a dream of completing the first phase this year and the opportunity to translate this dream into reality was made possible on 3rd November when the 'TALKING LIBRARY' was inaugurated by our Association President Mrs. Gulnar Marfatia, in the presence of Association EC members and our Dist. Chairman Mrs. Preeti Shah. It was a rare honour and privilege for our Club. The substantial amount of funds we raised this year has enabled us to successfully complete this project in a record time. Our Club could not have asked for a greater opportunity than to have been an instrument in translating the above idea into action for the cause of the visually handicapped. The 'TALKING LIBRARY' will enable the children to have an access to the audio cassettes that will provide lectures on topics related to every subject. CIVIC IMPROVEMENT/PLANTATION
We are deeply concerned for the preservation of Nature and the Environment. The indiscriminate felling of trees and the fast diminishing greenery is the cause of climatic imbalances. In order to bring about consciousness we have felt the need to promote plantation through the involvement of residents of this Temple City and we have conducted plantation programmes in Kendriya Vidyalaya No. 1, Shirdi Sai Mandir IRC Village, Shiv Mandir Khandagiri, Bhubaneswar Special Jail, Douglas Home Orphanage and Bhima Bhoi Blind School.
